Excellence in Education
We must commit as a nation to remain the world’s pre-eminent source of excellence at every level of education, from pre-school through college. We must be the best in teaching, student achievement, research and innovation. Now, more than ever, education is the key to opportunity for every child and indeed for the future of our nation.
I believe we must re-dedicate our nation’s commitment to the highest quality universal public education. Strong education has led us to become a nation of innovation and private enterprise, of learning and discovery. A learned and wise citizenry is critical to ensuring the success of our democracy now and in the future. In no small measure, education has unlocked the door to the American Dream. Now we must adapt schools to the rapidly changing needs of the global economy and the unchanging needs to stimulate creativity, rational thought, and a better understanding of our world.
I have been talking with teachers, students, parents, administrators, college administrators, professors, and others throughout the district. I have heard of serious failings of the No Child Left Behind program. I am eager to work together with teachers and others who face our educational needs daily to fix the flaws in that program. I am enthused by the leadership, energy and ideas of those involved in the institutions of higher education in the Fourth District, and look forward to working with them on policies to reach even higher levels of excellence.
